3 Butterfly Life Cycle Activities for Teaching Elementary

Ever find yourself tangled in the web of science myths, especially about our fluttery friends, the butterflies? Well, you’re not alone. I’m here to share some of my top picks for butterfly life cycle activities, teaching the butterfly life cycle in a way that’s as engaging as it is enlightening.

And let’s be real: Who doesn’t want to debunk a few myths along the way?

Butterfly Pavilion Extravaganza

First, let’s talk about the Butterfly Pavilion – a real game-changer from Insect Lore.

They send you the kit in the mail, complete with a coupon for butterfly eggs. Once you get those eggs, they turn into tiny larvae, munching away on fruit, and bam! Before you know it, they’re forming chrysalides (not cocoons, thank you very much) right before your eyes.

Watching them transform from a nondescript blob into majestic butterflies is nothing short of magical. It’s a front-row seat to nature’s most fascinating butterfly life cycle activities – complete metamorphosis!

Pop Culture Myth Busters

Now, let’s tackle those pesky myths. You know, like the whole “butterflies are delicate” thing. Pfft, ever met a Monarch? They’re the endurance athletes of the insect world! One of our favorite classroom activities is playing detective with butterfly facts. Ever read The Very Hungry Caterpillar?

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

Cute story, but it gets the chrysalis part all wrong. Why not have your students write a persuasive letter to Eric Carle, or better yet, rewrite the story with accurate info? It’s a fantastic way to mix creativity with critical thinking.

DIY Butterfly Life Cycle Model

Last but definitely not least, let’s get those hands busy with some DIY action. Grab some pipe cleaners, straws, Play-Doh, toothpicks – or something you have on hand from my STEM Boxes.

Students can work solo or in small groups to create models of each life cycle stage.

It’s a hands-on way to solidify those concepts and have a bit of fun too. And if you’re looking to keep track of all this learning, my Butterfly Life Cycle Lapbook has got you covered.

It’s packed with vocab games, writing activities, and even graphing exercises to chart each stage’s duration.

You can get this lapbook in my TPT shop here.

Okay, I just added this BONUS activity to my TPT shop. I created these Butterfly Science Lessons because I didn’t want to spend time mapping out the curriculum or searching for books in the library to teach my students about butterflies.

This includes 10 Butterfly Science Lessons that you can use in conjunction with the Butterfly Lapbook, Butterfly Pavilion, and even with my Butterfly STEAM Activity. You can use these to pace your lessons. Plus, I’ve included a 5E lesson plan template to make it super easy to plan each lesson. It only takes about 30 minutes for each one.

Grab these 10 Butterfly Science Lessons from my TPT shop here.

So, there you have it—three activities that are sure to add some sparkle to your science lessons and maybe even boost those test scores (I make no promises, but hey, it worked for us). Swing by my TPT shop to grab the resources mentioned. Stay tuned for more life cycle adventures next week.
