🪑 Can a Desk Keep You Safe in an Earthquake?
Desks aren’t just for reading, writing, and learning—they can also help keep you safe during an earthquake!
If the ground starts to shake, one of the safest things to do is drop, cover, and hold on. That means getting down on the ground, taking cover under a sturdy desk or table, and holding on until the shaking stops.
Why a desk? A strong desk can protect your head and body from falling things like books, ceiling tiles, or broken glass. But not all desks are built the same!
Some desks are made of wood, metal, or plastic. A good desk needs to be strong, stable, and able to hold up weight without tipping over. Today, many desks also need space to fit laptops, tablets, and even chargers.
Designers think about safety, storage, and space when creating desks for classrooms, offices, and homes.
Did You Know?
In earthquake drills, students practice hiding under their desks—just like a real emergency!
🧠Your Challenge:
Design a desk that can hold a laptop or tablet. Think about where the device will sit, how cords will fit, and how to make it strong enough to protect someone during an earthquake. Bonus points if it has storage too!
