🎨 What’s an Easel?
An easel is a stand that holds up your paper or canvas while you create art. It keeps your work steady, so you can draw or paint without it slipping or sliding around.
Most easels have three legs. This helps them stand tall and steady—even if the ground isn’t flat. The top part holds the paper in place, and the bottom shelf gives your art a place to rest. Easels come in all sizes, from small tabletop ones to giant ones for big paintings!
But not all art is made on an easel. Some artists paint on walls, ceilings, or even the ground. Long ago, a famous artist named Michelangelo painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. He didn’t use an easel at all—he painted while lying on his back on tall scaffolding!
Artists choose how to work based on their tools, their space, and their ideas. An easel is just one way to make art—but it’s a pretty helpful one!
Did You Know?
Some easels fold up so artists can carry them outside and paint in nature. That’s called plein air painting!
🧠Your Challenge:
Design an easel that has three legs. Can it fold up? Hold big paper? Fit on a desk? Think about what an artist would need to make something amazing!
