A Full Day of Fun Without the Chaos
Our school is dedicating an entire day to Halloween this year. That includes costumes, parades, and all. After the morning excitement, I already know my students will be full of energy and short on focus.

So, I’ve made peace with the fact that we’re not diving deep into new content that day.
Instead, I’m loading up on hands-on, creative Halloween games and activities that let students review, play, and move without the chaos.

If it keeps their hands busy and their brains kind of learning, it’s a win in my book.
My Go-To Halloween Games and Activities
Let’s be real… I’m probably not getting through all six of these activities this year, but I’m definitely overplanning (because what teacher doesn’t?).
These games are my absolute favorites because they hit that sweet spot between fun and learning.
Halloween Math Games
I created my Halloween Math Games to give any of my Simply STEAM math or grammar games a festive twist. The add-on set includes math fact cards for counting, addition and subtraction within 20, and even multiplication and division.

But here’s the best part… You don’t have to stick to the cards! Every component is Halloween-themed, so you can mix and match with any Simply STEAM game you already own.

It keeps your content the same while giving it that spooky, seasonal flair.

We love using the Halloween Game Board for just about anything. It works perfectly with any skill set. I also included Race to 20 Boards (Halloween edition, of course!) and STEM task cards that pair perfectly with them. My students use candy corn as game pieces because why not?

They can even keep them afterward if you’re feeling generous.
STEM to Win
Next up is STEM to Win. This was the very first game I ever created! I made it years ago with my second graders, and it was such a hit that it’s still one of my favorites.
At the time, I wanted a way to practice grammar that wasn’t just another worksheet. So, I blended Halloween fun with real learning and created grammar cards packed with spooky facts.

Students answer questions about punctuation, capitalization, and multiple-meaning words while also learning fun Halloween trivia.
In my original version, we built using toothpicks and marshmallows (because who doesn’t love edible engineering?), but you can use any materials from your STEM boxes.

It works just like my other STEM task cards in the Simply STEAM Math and Grammar Games: hands-on, flexible, and easy to set up.
Halloween Activities Pack
This year, I’m extra excited about my Halloween Activities Pack because it’s saving my sanity with early finishers. That’s my goal. I want to keep those little hands busy so they’re not inventing new ways to get in trouble.

This pack is super easy to differentiate. It includes Color-by-Code pages for every level—basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. There are tons of different puzzles, so you can use some for morning work, pop a few in centers, or even staple them into a mini-packet for students to complete throughout the day.

I also tucked in several Halloween Word Searches, which my students love. And when the day’s wrapping up and everyone’s running on candy fumes, we pull out Halloween Bingo.

There are 30 boards included! It’s the perfect way to bring the noise level down and make it to dismissal with a bit of peace and quiet.
Bat Life Cycle Reading Passage & Worksheets
Another favorite I’ve used in the past is my Bat Life Cycle Reading Passage and Worksheets. It’s perfect for keeping little hands busy while sneaking in some real learning.

If you’ve read Stellaluna with your class, this is the easiest next step because it pairs beautifully! The passage is nonfiction, so students get to explore the real-life cycle of a bat, and it comes with an interactive comprehension worksheet that makes things even more hands-on.
You can take it up a notch with a quick craft: students can cut and create their own bat life cycle timeline or build a spinner to show each stage. Either way, it keeps them focused, calm, and proud of their finished product (and you get a few blessed minutes of quiet).
Halloween STEM Task Cards
This year, we’re adding a spooky twist to our STEM boxes (a.k.a. our makerspace) with my Halloween STEM Task Cards. These open-ended challenges are perfect for early finishers who need something creative and constructive to do… literally.

Each card gets students thinking, building, and problem-solving in fun, unexpected ways. Some spark ideas for engineering and design, while others inspire research projects or creative writing.
You can even swap these in place of your STEM to Win challenges from my math or grammar games. It’s such an easy seasonal switch that keeps your routine the same but makes everything feel new again.

Día de los Muertos Lesson
Finally, we can’t forget about Día de los Muertos! This year, Halloween falls on a Friday and Día de los Muertos follows on Saturday, so we’ll be celebrating it that Monday. Honestly, the timing couldn’t be better. It fits perfectly with our Social Studies unit on how different cultures shape our communities.

In this activity, students learn about the traditions and celebrations of Día de los Muertos through a mix of Social Studies, Art, and ELA. It’s a thematic lesson that sparks curiosity and helps students make meaningful connections between culture and creativity.
My students have been obsessed with the graphic novels by Raina Telgemeier—especially Ghosts, Smile, Drama, and Sisters. The book Ghosts is the perfect tie-in because it explores Día de los Muertos through a family’s story. It’s a great way to transition into nonfiction reading about the real holiday.

After reading, we dive into my Día de los Muertos Reading Passage, which teaches students about the history and meaning behind the celebration. Then comes their favorite part—creating sugar skulls!
This art activity was inspired by Papel picado, a traditional Latin American folk art. Students design and decorate their own sugar skulls as a keepsake, and I’ve built in differentiation options so everyone can participate. No matter their fine motor skill level.
It’s hands-on, meaningful, and a calm, creative way to start the week after Halloween hype.
