Insect STEM Challenge for Kids

🐛 What’s a Bug (and Is It in My Computer)?

When you hear the word bug, you might think of ants, bees, or beetles. These are all insects—tiny animals with six legs, antennae, and a hard shell. Insects are the largest group of animals on Earth!

But did you know the word “bug” can also mean a problem in a computer? A computer bug isn’t a real insect crawling in your laptop—it’s a mistake in the computer’s code that makes something go wrong. The term started when early computers actually did have real bugs (like moths) stuck inside!

Insects may be small, but they’ve inspired some big inventions. Scientists and engineers study how insects move, fly, and survive. They’ve designed tiny flying robots based on dragonflies, and sticky tape based on the feet of beetles.

Insects are great at solving problems—like how to carry heavy loads, climb upside down, or fly fast. When people design things by studying nature, it’s called biomimicry.

Did You Know?

The wings of a butterfly helped scientists create materials that change color when the light hits them—just like real butterfly wings!

🧠 Your Challenge:

Invent something inspired by an insect. Will it fly, crawl, climb, or glow? Think like a scientist and an artist. What problem will your invention solve?
