🌊 How Does a Submarine Work?

A submarine is a special kind of boat that can travel underwater. Unlike most boats that float on top, submarines can sink down and then rise back up—all on purpose!

So how does that work?

Submarines have tanks inside called ballast tanks. When the tanks fill with water, the submarine gets heavier and sinks. When the tanks fill with air, the submarine gets lighter and floats back to the top. It’s all about controlling buoyancy—the force that pushes things up in water.

To move around underwater, submarines use propellers and rudders. The propellers spin to push the sub forward, and the rudders help it turn. Submarines also have lights and sonar so they can see and “hear” underwater.

Some submarines are used by the Navy. Others are used by scientists who want to study the deep ocean where sunlight can’t reach.

Did You Know?

The deepest part of the ocean is called the Mariana Trench. Only a few submarines in the world have ever reached it!
