š¢ Whatās the Difference Between Turtles, Tortoises, and Terrapins?
They all have shells. They all walk slowly. So⦠whatās the difference?
Turtles live mostly in the water. They have webbed feet or flippers and love to swim in oceans, rivers, and ponds. Tortoises live on land. They have strong, chunky legs made for walkingānot swimming. Terrapins are kind of in between. They live in swamps and brackish water, where fresh water and salt water mix.
One thing they all have in common? A hard shell! That shell protects them from danger. Some turtles can even pull their heads, legs, and tails inside when they feel scared.
Their bodies are built for safety and strength. Thatās why scientists and engineers study turtles when designing backpacks, helmets, and even robots!
Did You Know?
A turtleās shell is actually part of its skeletonāand it grows with them, just like your bones grow with you!
š§ Your Challenge:
Invent something inspired by a turtle. Could it protect something? Could it move slowly and safely? Maybe it floats or travels across land and water! What will your turtle-inspired design do?
