Simple and Fun End of the School Year Celebration

The end of the school year is just around the corner, and if you’re like me, you’re probably feeling a mix of exhaustion and excitement. We’ve got about two more weeks left, and I know it can feel like a crazy, chaotic time. So, let’s talk about a simple, budget-friendly way to celebrate that won’t leave you stressed out.

Why is the End of the School Year So Hard

First off, let’s be real. The end of the school year is hard because there’s just so much to do. Between all the expectations of grades and school events, holidays, and what seems like a million birthdays (May is a huge birthday month in my family), it’s a lot. Plus, I swear the pollen just makes us all more tired. LOL

How to Celebrate the End of the School Year

When I first started teaching, I tried to do the classic pizza party. Collecting money from parents, waiting for the pizza delivery, and dealing with cold pizza was a nightmare. A few years later, my friend Lindy suggested the nacho party, and it was a game-changer. No more waiting for cold pizza or dealing with the dreaded task of collecting money from parents.

Setting Up Your Nacho Average Class Party

Here’s what you need:

  • Nacho Cheese: Start by grabbing a big can of nacho cheese from Costco. Use a slow cooker with a liner to keep it warm all day. The liner makes it super easy to clean afterward.
  • Nachos: Costco’s giant bag of nachos is perfect.
  • Toppings: Salsa, guacamole, and sour cream. Keep it simple!
  • Plates and Napkins: Pick these up at Costco too.

Celebration Day Timeline for the End of the School Year

Invite Parents: Start by inviting families to join the celebration. This makes the event special for the kids and is a great way to say goodbye to the families you’ve built relationships with.

Memory Books: While waiting for everyone to arrive, have students share something with their families, like their memory books. This is a great way to reflect on the year and give everyone something to do instead of staring at the wall. Get three fun ideas right here!

Music and Food: Next, turn on some fun music to play in the background. While the music is on, let the students fix their nacho plates at the nacho bar. They’ll love the independence!

Class Awards: After everyone has eaten, it’s time for class awards. If you need some ideas, check out my video on awesome end-of-year classroom awards.

Thank You: Once you’ve passed out the awards, you can the families for attending and for their support throughout the year. You can gift them something like a bag of popcorn or a can of soda and tell them, “Thank You for POPping in.”

Piñata Fun: Additionally, for a little extra fun, smash a piñata. The kids love it!

Student Gifts: Finally, give out student gifts. Simple and thoughtful gifts are perfect. I recently shared a blog post about some of the student gifts I give my students. Not only are they affordable, but they’re easy to prep and the kids enjoy them.

Alternative Activities That Aren’t a Movie for the End of the School Year

At last, if you’re looking for additional activities that are fun and don’t involve showing a movie, try these:

Memory Books: First, let students create a book filled with their favorite memories and achievements with their families. It’s a wonderful way to encapsulate their growth and learning. Get some ideas here.

But what about that last week of school when there’s nothing to do after testing?

STEM Challenges: During the last week of school, keep students’ brains engaged with hands-on STEM activities. These challenges are a fantastic way to end the year on a high note.

Games: Finally, simple, fun games can make the day feel special and memorable without the fuss of repetitive workbooks. Learn more about my games here.

I’ve got blog posts that dive deeper into each of these activities, so be sure to check those out for more details.

Your Turn!

Finally, I’d love to know if you have a theme for your end of the school year celebration. Does the nacho party sound great to you? Comment below and let me know your thoughts. If you try it, hit that thumbs up and share your experience.

I hope you give this nacho party a try. It’s easy, budget-friendly, and a total hit. You’ll never go back to pizza parties. Seriously, you’ll be so glad you tried this.
