Whether it’s Simply STEAM Math Games or Simply STEAM Grammar Games, teachers love that these game cards are self-checking! But wouldn’t it be nice if you could turn these game cards into task cards? That way, you could use them as a formative assessment.
Before I show you how to do that, I think it’s important to understand what task cards are and why they are beneficial.

What Are Task Cards? Why Are They Helpful?
Task cards are smaller cards with one problem on them, and they help students who easily get overwhelmed and frustrated by big tasks. By limiting each card to one task, you prevent anxiety and build confidence in your students.
We use task cards for review and formative assessments. I like to place these cards around the classroom to get students up and moving.
Now that you know what task cards are and how they’re helpful let’s talk about how to make them. It’s super easy!

Print the problem page on one side, and do not print the answer key on the back. Next, you’ll cut the cards and select 20 (or all 40). Then, you’ll need to label each card with a number so students know where to record their answers on their answer sheet.
Below is a video with a quick demonstration of playing these games and using them as task cards.
Make sure you read this blog post to learn how I prep these games.
One thing you’ll need to do is create the answer key yourself, but this is simple considering the answer key is already in the pdf.
This idea is just another fun way for you to use these game cards from any Simply STEAM Math Games or Grammar Games.

I created these recording sheets so that you can save time preparing for a formative assessment with these cards. I’ve included the subject in the title of the recording sheet, as well as a place for students to write the topic. This will help you keep track of topics and answers.
There are several options with these recording sheets. I’ve included responses for 16, 24, and 40 problems. That’s because each page has 8 cards, so you’ll only need to print two, three, or all the pages.
Make sure you download this free recording sheet today and let me know if this is something you’ll be trying with your class!
