Exploring the life cycle of a plant can transform your classroom into a lively learning environment. The following activities can deepen understanding of nature’s processes and one of them can double as an adorable Mother’s Day gift. From lima bean necklaces to Pollination Challenges, let’s explore how these simple projects can bring science to life in your classroom.
1. What Happens Beneath the Soil During the Life Cycle of a Plant?
I love asking this question to students because they give me a variety of answers. It’s a natural way to gain student buy-in and easy for science inquiry.

One of my favorite projects is the Lima Bean Necklace. This simple yet effective experiment allows students to observe a seed’s germination up close and bonus – it’s wearable!! Here’s how we do this:
Materials Needed:
- Jewelry-sized baggies (tap here for my affiliate link) or snack sized
- Damp paper towel or cotton ball
- Lima bean
- String
- Hole puncher
Procedure:
Insert the damp paper towel or cotton ball and lima bean into the baggie. Seal it, hole punch the top, and tie the string through the hole to create a wearable necklace. Your students can proudly wear their germinating seeds and observe the roots forming in just a few hours.
CD Greenhouse Variation:

Another option to view the roots is to use old CD cases as mini greenhouses. Place some soil and a lima bean inside, sprinkle with water, and close the case. This setup not only recycles old materials but also creates a stunning visual representation of plant growth.
My student teacher did this one year, and it was so neat! Check out Junior Master Gardner where they explain more from their website how to do this.
2. Explore Why Insects are Essential for the Life Cycle of a Plant
Why are insects so important for the survival of plants? Because plants cannot move! They have a symbiotic relationship with insects. Plants provide food for insects, while insects help them reproduce new seeds.

Pollination is crucial to the life cycle of plants, and understanding it can be incredibly fun with our Pollinator STEM Challenge.
Activity Overview:
Students build a model insect using pipe cleaners, straws, or any craft materials that you might have on hand. Using their insect model, they simulate pollination by transferring ‘pollen’ (cinnamon) from one ‘flower’ (sugar) to another.

3. Life Cycle of a Plant in a Cup – Perfect for Mother’s Day
Finally, our Seed Tray activity is perfect for gifting. Each student starts with a seed. I prefer Zinnias because they’re so pretty, but use whatever is native to your area to support your pollinators’ livelihood.
Materials Needed:
- Seeds native to your area
- Seed Starting Tray (affiliate link): https://amzn.to/3vQOoZ5
- Small Cups
- Ribbon
Procedure:
Plant the seeds in trays and watch them sprout over the course of a few days. Once grown, transfer them into decorative cups and tie a ribbon around them. They’re ready to be the perfect Mother’s Day gift.

If you have leftover Play-Doh cups, upcycle these for the cups. It’s super easy. Just drill a hole through the bottom and hot glue the lid to the bottom so it catches water.

If you’re homeschooling or want to do this with your kids, look at Knowing Nature. We planted microgreens with my kids, and they loved it because we could use the greens in our recipes.
The app sent us text updates on how to care for these plants, which was nice because I often forget about watering most of my house plants. My kids even decorated their microgreen planters with stickers. It was so cool!

These activities not only teach about the plant life cycle but also connect students to real-world biological processes and provide a memorable, practical application of their learning. If you’re looking for more resources, check out my comprehensive collection of Life Cycle of Plant resources: ⤵️
