We’re diving deep into one of my favorite science topics – the life cycle of a frog. I’ve got some engaging activities and fun facts to share that will have your elementary students leaping for joy as they learn. Before we jump into these activities, let’s explore some remarkable frog facts: ⤵️
Frogs have breathable skin: Frogs have super special skin that lets them absorb oxygen directly through it. Neat, right?

Frogs are incredible jumpers! Can you imagine jumping 20 times your body length? Frogs can do it, making them elusive targets for predators.

Teeth in the back? Yep, some frogs have teeth right at the back of their mouth. Talk about a surprise bite!
What’s the Life Cycle of a Frog?
Starting with eggs in the water frogs have a fascinating developmental journey, starting as eggs in the water. Here’s a quick rundown of their life cycle:

Eggs: Laid in water, this is the first stage of a frog’s life.

Tadpole: After hatching, the larvae (tadpoles) breathe with gills and don’t resemble adult frogs at all.

Tadpole with Legs: As they grow, tadpoles sprout legs, and their gills start getting replaced by lungs.

Froglet: Subsequently, when a tadpole’s tail shrinks completely, it becomes a froglet, making the leap from water to land.

Adult Frog: Fully grown, they start the cycle all over again by laying eggs.
Each stage is crucial and showcases nature’s miraculous transformations.
How Long Does It Take for a Tadpole to Become a Frog?
Interestingly, this journey from tadpole to frog typically takes about 12 – 16 weeks, but it can vary widely depending on the environment and species.
Frog-Themed Classroom Activities
Let’s hop into some thrilling classroom activities to explore these stages and adaptations hands-on:
Frog Jump Challenge:

Inspired by the impressive jumping ability of frogs, this activity involves a fun physical challenge. Students try a ‘standing long jump’ to see how their best leaps measure against a frog’s. Use tiles to calculate how far a frog would jump if it leaped 20 times its body length!

Frog Watch USA

Engage in citizen science with Frog Watch USA. This project allows students to listen for frog calls and record what they hear, thus providing valuable data for scientists studying amphibian populations.
Life Cycle of a Frog Crafts & Activities

Use our Frog Life Cycle Worksheets and Activities from TPT to create a hands-on experience. These crafts help visualize the transition from tadpole to adult frog, making the learning process incredibly vivid and memorable.
Why Teach the Life Cycle of a Frog?

Understanding life cycles is a fundamental biological concept, helping students grasp broader ecological and environmental principles. Plus, frogs are just plain cool!

Whether you’re teaching first graders or fifth graders, these activities are adaptable and guaranteed to engage. Don’t forget to check out the resources linked above to get everything you need to bring the life cycle of a frog into your classroom.
Next month, I’m all about end-of-year activities. Lastly, I can’t wait to share those with you! If you enjoyed this peek into froggy life, comment below and tell me which activity you are excited to try!
